I think Joop Schafthuizen is a hilarious dude, but he's also one fucked up individual. As for Reve: it must've been frustrating for him that his debut is his only classic. What followed was a bunch of funny verses, a couple of witty letters and a truckload of shitty novels. Great cult figure, superior irony and all...but easily the weakest link in the Big Three. And I don't say that to piss in your soup.

But perhaps we should continue this very Dutch conversation in a bar in Leiden one of these days...I don't think anyone else can follow this.

One other thing though: Karakter the movie won an Oscar, but I always thought it sucked. Lead roles are miscasts, story was stripped down till it fell apart. A year after I left the theatre in a bad temper I found out what the problem was: The screenplay wasn't based on the novel, but on the story Bordewijk turned in to Karakter. The short version called 'Dreverhaven & Katadreuffe' got published in a magazine in the 30s. I bought a rare reprint of it shortly after I found out. Cool stuff.
