I've wished we had a garage, but I know if we did it would be crammed full of stuff with no room for our car.
I recall the house I mainly grew up in back in NY and its one car garage. It was piled high with junk for so many years with no room for the family car. Then one day when I was about 16 my dad asked me to help him clean it out, and after that he actually used the garage for his car. Thing was, all of the houses on that street were built and looked all the same, and I would say that 90% of the neighbors were the same way, they never used their garage for their car, but for storage instead. It also seemed around the same time when we cleaned out our garage, so did most of the other neighbors, too. Then after that, most used the garage for what it was really meant to be use for. Talk about monkey see, monkey do. New Yorkers are so much that way, more than those who live out west.
But the way I see it, you vehicle will last longer if you keep it in a garage; so if you got one, you should take advantage of it. The old house that I owned before this one, well, I lived in it for almost 20 years and not only didn't it have a garage, but it didn't even have a driveway! It sat on the edge of this hill/mountainside. So I tell ya, when I built this house 7 years ago, I made sure I had a garage, and a attached one at that. And my driveway is really a dirt road, it is a half acre long, with enough room in front of the garage where about 6 or 7 cars can park.
