It seems like such an odd conclusion that those with no older siblings have horrible taste in music "often" as you noted.
I agree with her! Not sure how much that is the case today, but it clearly was true back when I was a kid. One thing I remember back when I was like 8, 10 years old, was that I was lucky to have two older sisters who were big time Beatles fans. They were the ones who turned me on to rock music; I became a Stones fan very early on because of them. I also noticed the other boys my age (and there were lots of us since this was the Baby Boom age) who had older sisters and brothers, they were lucky just like me, turned on to the same music because of their older siblings, where as my friends who were the oldest in their family or had no siblings, they were not into rock music (or any music) at first, not at all, not until they got into their teens; as most of the parents back then not only didn't like rock music, they would not even tolerate it. So at least back then you did get shaped by your older siblings in that good way. Yet I have noticed today with my two grandsons who have lived half their lives with me, how that isn't so much true as it once was. The older one is like his mother, he seems to like all music, from country, to classic rock, to metal, to rap, hip hop, I mean everything, including his favorite - Elvis. Yet his little brother is mainly just into heavy metal and rap, the same stuff that his best friend is into (but it is clear when the Stones and Beatles are playing that he likes them too, thanks to me and his mom, even if he won't admit it). So maybe it isn't the same thing today, then again, the town I'm in is different and totally isolated, even our kids here are different, many of them like classic rock. So I'm no expert on other kids today who live elsewhere in the real world.
