Devilsadvocate, I didn't know you were shy!
In high school and early college I was certain I was destined to be a famous actress -- I knew I would be in the limelight, and saw that as something highly desirable. But, among other things, as I got to know myself better in late adolescence I realized the acting world was far too brutal for me. I'm not quite made of stern enough stuff to handle those particular slings and arrows. Further, altho not shy, per se, I'm quite private, and any type of fame prohibiting easy escape from the public eye would be my undoing. Plus, after small-time notoriety in college for my acting, I also knew my ego was too susceptible to flattery and external validation or criticism to be healthy. When I stopped drinking at 28 I quickly realized that my whole life (like most alcoholics who are grandiose one minute and curled in a fetal tuck the next) I'd need to be vigilant to my ego all my life. And fame would be a poison worse than booze or drugs for me.
