RE: Tull, Iommi & Circus

When Tull performed at Circus, Tony Iommi was their interim guitarist.

Actually, he wasn't supposed to be the "interim" at all - he was hired to replace Abrahams. But after that one show he didn't want to ever play with Anderson again because as he put it, Anderson was way too strange for him. That and he had just formed the new Black Sabbath, and he had to choose between the 2. There was no guarantee that Sabbath would become big, and for that matter, no guarantee that Tull would, either. But in Sabbath he would be the boss, while that wasn't to be the case in Tull, and he knew it. But at that point, Tull was one step ahead of Sabbath, but again, Anderson was a very unusual person for late 1968. While he looked like a true anti establishment hippie dude, he wasn't, as he was totally anti drugs and anti hippie. Not that Iommi was a hippie, he was more a punk - but he did do drugs and wasn't about to stop to please Anderson. But Iommi in his short time with Anderson, still liked his approach to being the band leader, and took in some of what he saw in the dude and applied it to his other band that he would return to.

The funny thing was that Iommi was a bully towards Ozzy, who he controlled while they were both in high school together. Ozzy was a grade behind Iommi in school and Iommi didn't like him and took advantage of him. Guess he wanted the control over Ozzy to continue, as Sabbath was his band and Ozzy his bitch, and that's the band he ended up returning to after just a week being in Tull.

I also had (well still have) one of the first boots to the Circus (there were 3 of them) and I had the one that showed everything, including the performances that were cut out, and without any of the bullshit, unneeded editing that the Glimmers added in to their performance. You can actually hear Brian Jones playing his guitar on JJF and on YCAGWYW and he sounds fine, and again, there's no studio guitar added in to any of the songs like we hear on the official release.

But like Shattered, when I first saw the boot, while I had a clear enough picture, I had no clue it was Iommi playing guitar for Tull. This was in the mid '80s, and I played the tape for my nephew one night when he was visiting us for a few days. He was only about 10 or so at time. He was a big metal fan back then, and when Tull comes on he says to me "Uncle Keno, I didn't know Tony Iommi was in Tull?! Wow, how cool!" My answer to him was, "That's Tony Iommi?"... "No, it can't be". But then my wife, who liked metal, looks closer at the TV and says, he's right, it is Tony Iommi, look he's playing left handed! I had already seen this tape about 5 or 6 times by then and never noticed that it was him... but I wasn't ever a big Black Sabbath fan, either, and I had no clue Iommi played left handed. But the kid (and wife) were correct, it was Iommi!
