Rumors as to why this happened and why that didn't happen has always been a part of that great show and event, especially when it wasn't released for so many years, that alone set off rumors that claimed that the Stones were terrible that night - and it took the public what, about 25 years to find out that was totally not true at all.
As far as the Zeppelin rumor goes, it could be true, but I bet it ain't. They were the first choice by the Stones to be pegged as the "new" act on the bill, but the other side of the story on why they never were chosen in the end was because Page was under contract to play a final tour with (or as) the Yardbirds, so they had to be on the road finishing up that tour at that time (and at first they were forced to be billed as the "New Yardbirds" and not as Led Zep) when the Circus was being planned - and that more than likely was what got in Led Zep's way and why they weren't included in the final plans. That, and plus the Stones and their management weren't looking at those guys as being a real "new band" at all, either, as Page and John Paul Jones were looked at as oldtimers to the Stones by then, as the 2 been around the Stones since the earliest of days as session players and or as arangers. But more than likely, the deal with the "New Yardbirds" was what got in the way and why Zep wasn't chosen in the end to play at the Circus.
