RE: RE: RE: RE: Deep Purple & The Dregs, too

Yes, and the reason they got rid of him back then was because his voice was gone. They actually got rid of him twice because of his voice going out.

There was this excellent special on AXS TV just about 3 weeks ago about Deep Purple - actually, it was mainly about Richie Blackmore. It was on just long enough ago for me to start to forget some of what I learned about them and him. But while I've never been a giant DP fan, I found the special very interesting and entertaining. I think all old time rock fans, especially all of you who were around enjoying rock music when DP first started out - would have enjoyed this special, so when (if) it's on again, do check it out! But they were very clear on this special that Gillian had lost his singing voice to where he couldn't sing anymore and sounded terrible. The entire band, especially Blackmore, felt he needed to be replaced and that was why he was let go. Then a few years later they did a reunion album with him and let him stay on for a few more years, but his voice while a bit improved, was still shot. So they got rid of him again, and then around the time that Blackmore left the group (1993?), that was when he permanently came back. I have no idea how as an old man he sounds today, but with Steve Morse now the lead guitarist since 1994, Gillan's voice doesn't seem to be a big issue anymore.

I myself was always a big fan of Morse and loved his lead guitar playing in the Dixie Dregs years ago (he played that role with them for almost 20 years before joining DP) and when he joined up with DP I recall thinking, I'm gonna be a big DP fan now for sure! Yet that never happened for whatever reasons for me, although he and DP have made it big enough since he joined that group. I also no longer follow the Dregs anymore, even if Moss is still in that band too today along with their original drummer and long time bassist and violin player, too. But is there another rocker who has done that?... leading 2 totally different bands at the same time - for years on end?... But for myself, guess I just don't follow new music anymore (so it's not just Morse's 2 bands), period, and haven't for years now, other than of course I still follow the Stones new stuff, along with the new reggae and country music that I hear coming from my grandson's room (and I enjoy hearing it), while ignoring the new rap/hip-hop stuff he also plays (which I don't enjoy). So anyway, I know nothing of these 2 bands today other than DP still puts out big time selling studio albums to this day, while the Dregs still put out new live LPs - but haven't put out any new studio albums since Morse joined up with DP. But both bands still tour today, so Morse must be on the road 99% of the time since the early '90s.
