RE: RE: BJ/Keith/BTB vs SF/Bad Rock singers/more

I consider Jones to have been the 'musician' in the Rolling Stones, just as I consider McCartney to have been the 'musician' in the Beatles. Considering all the things that make someone a 'musician', I would rate Jones a 7. Given that there is not what you would call a huge output of work to judge on, I think that is a pretty high score. Had he been able to write lyrics like say Harrison did in the Beatles, then I would have made the score an 8.

I don't think it was Jones' playing ability that was outstanding as there was nothing overly complicated or technical in what he played (although there could be a case made for his cross harp playing being his best stuff, imo). I think it was in his musical imagination where Jones stood out. That ability to recognise what a song might benefit from, and to add that little something on a variety of instruments, gave the Stones another advantage over their contemporaries.

For me the Jones era was the best era of the Rolling Stones, that's not just down to Jones, but they would not have had the success then that they had, without Jones' input. It's a pity that Jones was pretty much at the end of the line when he and the Stones parted company, who knows what good music a healthy in body and mind Brian Jones might have produced. It was never going to be though, sadly.

Having just said that I think the Jones era of the Stones, when it came to choosing between an album that Jones was all over 'Between the Buttons', and 'Sticky Fingers', I chose the former, because it just 'rocks'.

I don't like Jon Anderson's voice,

On balance, Glam

Help is better, their songs.
