I respect your opinion too dude (and everybody who posts here).
Deep Purple is classic metal for sure, but there is a major difference between the sound of classic metal and say trash metal. The kids of today would agree with you that DP and LZ aren't metal, but those bands were the very first ones, the true godfathers of metal. I recall when the first LZ songs came out, nobody had ever heard anything like their music before.
I guess a singer like Gillan just doesn't wish to be labeled "heavy metal", but that's what he used to be, a metal singer. It's like how Richie Blackmore hates listening to rock music period and only listens to classical music when he isn't playing. But I understand that Gillan totally lost his voice several years ago, that's why DP got rid of him, but maybe had he been singing just straight or more mellow rock music instead, his voice might have lasted longer?
