"Rock" music genres are so ill defined, I feel.
Please consider all below statements preferenced with "in my opinion", which should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway.
"Rock"? "Rock 'n' Roll"? The terms are often interchangeable in common use.
Sure, Elvis is RNR; Buddy is. Chuck is. But it is often ambiguous. Are the Stones "rock" or "rock and roll"? I guess both, depending.
Heavy metal? I have my own take. I like *some* heavy metal ... a lot. But as with any genre, a lot of it I can't stand. I do not like thrash/speed "metal".
Bands that definitely are heavy metal:
Black Sabbath (the best example)
Iron Maiden (damn good)
Judas Priest (their 70s stuff is fantastic)
Bands that are called heavy metal, but are not:
Led Zeppelin (blues rock; not heavy metal)
Deep Purple (fantastic, but not heavy metal; hard rock, progressive rock)
ACDC (hard rock/blues rock; only the Bon Scott era is worhwhile)
Glam?
Slade? (They are underappreciated)
KISS (I can't stand them)
Iggy? (Not familiar enough to comment)
Early Bowie? (I love the first few albums ... up until and including Diamond Dogs)
I voted for heavy metal.
