Oh Keno you shouldn't think along the lines of 'giving in' or anything like that, it's not a competitive thing. I didn't grasp at first, but you've explained, and I'm just voicing some personal observations re your scale, and making a suggestion which you will either see merit in, or not.
"But as far as what does "good" mean? Well it falls between "great" and "average"!"......Lol Keno, very funny, very droll. Seriously, I think your description of your lowest rating i.e. 'put on your earplugs' is the kind of thing I was thinking you could do for all your ratings, just expand a bit.
To expand: if against your rating for Masterpiece/ Classic say, you had your definition of what those terms meant for you, for example, something like "A must-have, perfection itself. Reserved for the true top of the tops. This rating should be used only for your favourite album, or maybe your two favourites", then you would be setting the standard, and placing the marker for everybody else when they come to write a review of an album, or comment on somebody else's review.
As all the terms 'good', 'average', 'masterpiece', etc etc are subjective when applied to music, and taste in music itself is also subjective, then I think it would be a good idea if you yourself outlined the criteria by which you are rating albums, and that would then allow everyone else to continue using your scale, but with the difference now being, that they would be rating with more of an idea of what the rating means because they now have your definitions to judge their subjective view against. That in turn might go some way to help standardise what otherwise is just a collection of subjective ratings. Not that subjectivity can ever be entirely removed from appreciation, and rating of music. Not without an absolute standard. Just a thought.
