Well it was an entire morning of freezing fog and pure winter weather outside my door today (well, Friday), and as usual I was up early after little over night sleep. One thing about winter weather (yeah I know, it's not officially winter yet, but in this neck of the woods it starts in late November anyway) is it's good at keeping me (and everybody I guess) indoors more and I talked myself out of the long walk I had planned for the late morning. So what better a day to get back to re-rating a couple more of the Stones LPs I've been doing. Yeah, so that's what I did.
Some Girls and Emotional Rescue were the next 2 up for new reviews, so that's what I popped into the old CD player. For the very first time since I started this third and final re-rating of all of the studio albums for the Stones site, both LPs got lower instead of higher ratings from me this time around. But then again, for SG, not really. I had given it a 9.14 last time and today it received a 9.05, or if this had been me rating an album at the Classic Rock site, I would round it off to show a rating both times of 9.1, so in other words, no real change in the rating at all. But for whatever reason, where I do that about half the time at the other site, I’ve never done that at the Stones site, instead I just list the rating exactly as it is. Yet the truth of the matter is, 9.14 and 9.05 is the very same rating. So unless you want to be technical, SG scored the very same rating again.
Some Girls was played first of course, since it was the next album up to be re-rated – and yes, I’m going in the order of the albums’ release date. The 5 best songs out of the 10 on the LP once again got the same top ratings (tens). One of them "Just My Imagination", to me still is one of the best covers the Stones ever made. Another 10, the title cut, I realized I hadn’t heard since the last time I played the album, and come to think of it, this song is never played on the radio - ever. But it is a great song indeed; I guess we never get to hear it over the air because of the lyric about not having enough jam for black chicks.
But of the 5 non 10 rated songs; only two went up in the ratings this time around, “When the Whip Comes Down”, and “Lies”. The other 3 all fell some. One of them being “Respectable”, falling from an 8.9, all the way down to 7.5. I realized today for whatever reason that this one sounds too much like “Lies”, really, they are both played in the very same way, and while “Respectable” got the higher rating between the 2, since “Lies” comes first on the LP, “Respectable” should have been titled “Lies, Part 2”, even if they do have totally different lyrics, their music is the same.
When “Respectable” was playing I could not also help to think that a LP like this one, with songs like the aforementioned, and “Lies”, never could have been made with Mick Taylor still in the band. He just didn’t play guitar in that matter, while these 2 songs, along with a few others on this album were pure Ronnie Wood like songs indeed. Yeah, they could still have worked with Brian Jones in the band, but not MT.
For Emotional Rescue, what can I say other than I just never was crazy for this one, it always sounded okay at best, but nothing more than that. It’s now the 4th lowest rated Stones album for me (but the 3 below it haven’t gotten their new ratings yet, either). So it will be interesting for me anyway to see where this one ends up after the others get their next turn in this process.
There’s only 2 great songs on this entire album, tracks 8 and 9, those being the title cut and “She’s So Cold”. Both of them sounded even better this time around, and other than “Let Me Go”, they were the only songs on the LP to see higher ratings. The title cut almost made it to the 10 club, and I always remember it as the first Stones song that my oldest daughter liked (and my only kid to become a Stones fan). But all of the other songs on this one just don’t do it for me. “All About You” and “Indian Girl” got to be 2 of the all-time worst Stones songs ever made. I’ve really tried to like them, but I’m sorry, they both just flat out suck. “Dance Pt 1” is another true loser. That one is flat out the worst kick off song ever to appear on a Stones album, period. For the most part, it’s the only bad kick off song the Stones have ever made, as even on the other 4 low rated albums, the rest at least all have good starters to them, including even Dirty Work. Go ahead; try to tell me I’m wrong here.
So there’s another 2 Stones LPs re-rated and in the books for me. I only got what, 8 more to do. As long as it stays cold outside, I guess I should now get them all done by January the latest.
