Hi,
Good to see there are true audio freaks in Gasland.
My question is this: how does the sound and dynamic range odf SACDs compare to good 'ol vinyl?
When Cds first hit, i bought a player and a few of my old faves in the new format. I was immediately disappointed with the lack of depth I heard. Granted, some of this is due to poor remastering of the analog source, but I could really HEAR the difference, ESPECIALLY on the Stones reissues. Whoever is responsible for the CD mix of between the Buttons ought to serve a life sentence in federal prison.
To this day, I rarely listen to CDs. I own about 200, compared to around 3000 LPs. the only reason i own any at all is because there is stuff available on them not available elsewhere. And since everything is being recorded in digital, i feel i might as well listen to the new stuff in its intended format.
Currently, I am running an all tube system that consists of various Mcintosh and Dynaco equipment that i regularly service, recap, etc, to ensure reliability. My preamp is Van Alstine's newest model (as of last week), and all my rectification in everything is tube. My CD player is a middlebrow Pioneer elite, my speakers are double Advent 1's running in parallel, and I can STILL hear a noticeable difference between CD and vinyl.
How much will the SACD bridge the gap? What are its advantages specifically over clean, well cared for vinyl played on a good turntable with an excellent cartridge? Are there outboard DACs currently available in SACD format? I mean, i'll never ditch my records, but I certainly wouldn't mind having a new format to tinker with. Thanks for any help.
Dan
