Great explanation! (And I hate the logic about how they'll maintain a higher price, but I gotta believe you're dead on with how they'll justify it...)

One note/question: I bought an Alan Parsons SACD by mistake and it doesn't play in my CD or DVD player. Spoke with the manufacturer (of the disk, not the player[s]) and was given some hints for getting it to work (e.g., cycling the power while holding certain buttons in, etc.). Nothing worked.

Is it certain they'll play in all CD players (mines a Sony, so you'd think...) and can they be played in DVD players at all (mine's a JVC)?

They replaced the disk for me (still no go), so everything points to my hardware. But I'll probably haul off and just get a SACD player so it's broken in for new Stones releases anyway, so I'm more curious than anything else (and obviously have some time on my hands)...
