Audio DVD's are a whole nother kettle of fish. A DVD laser "beam" is much smaller and the tracking system of a DVD player is much more sophisticated than a CD player. I went to the locally owned audio store and listened to one, and they are wonderful. All the warmth of a vinyl record with at least twice the dynamic range. They don't play in CD players, though.
My only wonders with SACD are how does the data go on the disk? I haven't read up enough on it yet, but from what I've been hearing it has two tracks on it. If so, can an SACD player play like twice as much regular CD audio? Hey - I listen to rock and blues, pretty much music from 45 to (maybe) 14,000 cycles. I can probably only hear 14,000 cycles on a good day, so I know for a fact that in a blind test, I'll fail on the same remaster that's done on SACD and regular CD. But the most improtant part of the whole catalog upgrade is the remaster.
You WILL hear a difference on a remaster worked from the original tapes, no matter what format. Whether or not you will really be able to hear it on SACD or CD is probably debatable, but think about the Stereo Review tests of speaker cable. Monster Cable is definitely and excellent product, but NO ONE could hit over random chance at identifying it over zip cord (lamp cord guage). For those of you that use it, I'm not trying to give you shit, but unless your speakers are like 1/4 of a mile away from the amp, lamp cord sounds the same (but Monster Cable lasts longer - it's thicker so it takes longer to oxidize.).
I gotta get a new set of speakers with a smaller footprint. But there's no way I won't have the remasters to play on them. Look at what Cool Cool Hand and Mickboy have done from tape and vinyl sources! I think Bob Ludwig can handle it nicely!
