Are we living in a post-Rock 'N' Roll culture?

Keno, come excellent commentary here from you. Thank you.

I agree with much of what you say. When it comes to 50s rock vs 90s pop/rock, I am not sure what I would pick. Of course, nothing beats the best music of the 60s and 70s. Nothing. Yeah, there are 'one offs' today where someone records something truly great, but they seem rare.

In terms of the question of whether or not rock is dead... I might say that the question cannot be answered with 'yes' or 'no'.

In terms of Rap sounding less offensive than it did years ago, I think there have been some real cultural changes. First, the major rappers of the 90s are now in 40s and 60s, some even older. They have wives and families and they have changed their view. After the birth of his daughter, Jay-Z famously declared that he would never use the word 'bitch' again in a song. We have also been though a lot of conversations as a society about the "N word" which once seemed ubiquitous in rap music. Additionally there has been an examination of how sex and violence (other staples of the genre) are glorified in rap and the ramifications of this for young listeners.

We'll always be hearing new Rock. But I can't imagine hearing anything at the level of artistry we saw from the great bands of the 60s and 70s. I would love to be wrong on this.
