So then using my example of Eleanor Rigby, the strings definitely are the lead instrument(s) in that song. You are saying George Martin should get songwriting credit too?

No, not at all, you just said that, not I!

If George Martin suggested and also wrote the strings part, then yes, he should get a part of the writing credit - but not if he only suggested it to be tried. He's the song's producer - and that's what producers are suppose to do, make suggestions like that, but if they are actually writing the music part of the song, sure, they can claim a credit. But Martin didn't write anything on that song, he only did what producers do, made a suggestion to how the song should sound, and that isn't the same thing.
