Gothic, Colorado is eight miles north of Crested Butte and three miles north of Mt. Crested Butte. It sits at an elevation of 9,485 feet (2,891 meters). With its dramatic Gothic Mountain peak, the Elk Mountains range lies 1.1 miles from this little town. These mountains surrounded Gothic back when people roamed and lived in it, and still overlook what remains of it today: a peculiar but fascinating ghost town. A handful of original structures remain, nearly all deserted. A few current residents and a high-altitude field station (Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory - also known by as RMBL — pronounced 'rumble', with a summer staff of 140) call it home today.
