Gothic, Colorado
(Note: This page may need reloading on some browsers for new views)/span>
Gothic, is a scenic, high-altitude ghost town (but do read more about this down below) and former 1800s silver mining hub, just up the road from Crested Butte (8 miles) and nestled in the Elk Mountains at 9,485 feet (or 2,891 meters). At it's peak, Gothic had more than 1,000 people settled into it's town in the late 1880s. Today, it is occupied by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (aka RMBL, pronounced "rumble"), which uses the remaining historic buildings for ecological research, hosting scientists and visitors during the summer. There are many exciting things to do in Gothic, from hiking scenic trails to exploring the area’s rich history.
Now, to make things clear, Gothic is not a true ghost town, as in the summer, at the high-altitude biological field station of the RMBL, the population increases to approximately 180 people, primarily consisting of scientists and students. However, in the winter, Gothic's population drops down to just 4 people, including the locally famous Billy Barr (stylized as "billy barr"), an American scientist and eccentric mountain hermit, known for his collection of over 50 years of data on local snow levels, temperatures and animal migration in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. barr's data collection is recognized as critical evidence of the effects of climate change and he's the "unofficial caretaker" of the RMBL.
As far as just how much snow falls here per snow season, Gothic does see a lot. Looking a billy's records, he noted an average amount of 400.9 inches/1,0182.9 millimeters falling between September and June, each season. However, between the 2014-15 and 2025-26 seasons, well below average snow has fallen, thanks to climate change. With that noted, and as a climatologist myself, most, if not all of the state of Colorado is today, seeing the very same results that billy sees.

When there is little to no visibility the camera will focus on either the nearby road area, the snow board, or other close views.
Note: This cam sometimes shows the East River instead of the valley, especially in the winter months.
