RE: Anyone like...(nsc)

The White man I suppose. And I see your point about the PC. True that the show The Virginian was in decline, but so were westerns in general. There were very few Westerns coming & going after its cancellation in '71, and they didn't last long. What happened with The Virginian was, in the 9th and final season, the 'powers-that-were' may have seen that decline coming and therefore tried to expand the demographics and make this once great show appeal to a younger audience. It was an abysmal failure. How? ---

~~~ The incongruity. For example, even though the show takes place in the post civil war 1800s, they actually tried to make guest actors be kinda hippyish, even playing stupid songs in the background while we're watching a prolonged presentation of a lovely young couple falling in love. Pass me that plastic bag please.
~~~ While the show was still called The Virginian, they tried to modify the name by promoting it more as "The Men From Shiloh", I guess that sounded more modern.

~~~ While the show maintained the 'protagonist of the week' formula, new cast member Lee Majors, who played Heath Barkley on The Big Valley, seemed to be getting far too many of those starring roles.
~~~ This one is real sickening: Trampas's personality was totally different in that final season. Before, he was the fastest draw, highly likable, smart when he had to be, highly experienced. Then what happened?? All of a sudden now he's a real doofus who's clumsy and dangerous with a gun. My wife and I couldn't believe what they've done to Trampas. We were shocked!

It seems to me as that season went on, the scripts tried to shift back to more of its past style, but it was just too confusing, and too late.
