The Virginian was never about the Virginian but Trampus. Based on a movie?
No, it was loosely based on the 1902 novel by Owen Wister.
Played by James Drury, would you believe the Virginian's real name in the show was never revealed in the nine years the show was on the air? He kept being identified as the Virginian.
Trampas (played by Doug McClure) took on a completely different personality from the character in the novel, and a highly likable one!
Drury & McClure are the only actors who stayed for the whole 9 seasons.
