RE: RE: RE: Disc jockeys and NYC (nsc)

Yes, playing the oldies but more in a classic rock format with Motown mixed in regularly - when I lived in Telluride back 1979 to '85 and I was a deejay at KOTO radio (and did the "Keno on KOTO show"), I had the most liked show on that station then and in time was the main primetime deejay there. This was back when there were no classic rock stations yet - for the most part. The station was 100% freeform back in those days and run by locals. So 100% of the local shows (just not counting the pre recorded shows that weren't local) was what the deejay programed. I listened to the station a few months ago on the internet and it doesn't sound anything like that anymore today, doesn't even sound like they use any local deejays anymore, although I could be wrong on that.

But I only got to work at one other radio station like that, since by the time I moved back to the Colorado Front Range, radio stations were starting to change and the deejay were starting to have little say or no say at all in what they played. I worked on one station KHT (in Manitou Sps, CO), that was like that, which was 100% reel to reel and the deejay got to talk only about 3 times an hour on average. I got to give the weather report, time, and some local news, but that was it, I couldn't even say what songs were being played (it was a '60s oldies format, but not 100% rock music, either) since I didn't know until after the song played what was up next. There was only one turntable in the studio that was never used, a normal cart for playing the commercials (wonder if they still used them today?), and no CD player (CDs was still new back then). I was just told at what time to play what tape, and it was the only deejaying job that I had that didn't like. Hell, I was getting paid minimum wage to boot and working the midnight shift! Then the station closed down for a few weeks, everybody got let go, and then it got new owners, a new location in Colorado Sps, came back as KKCS and changed its format to country, and became one of the biggest stations in Colorado Sps. Yet today no more country on there - it's a Christian Contemporary station that nobody listens to. The present day KHT is now KKHT (call letters today have to have 4 letter to them - unless they been on the air non stop since the days when 3 call letters were used instead) and is also a Christian station today, in Houston Tx of all places.
