Yes, in court one is innocent until proven guilty. Our system works fairly well at this; it makes some errors as any system will, but it has built-in mechanisms to deal with such errors if/when they are discovered. The "court of public opinion" and the actual legal system are two different things, and we cannot say that they should mirror one another - it just doesn't work like that. Its too bad that some people are looked upon as guilty. In the best possible worlds they should not be. But it has nothing to do with the actual legal system, even though it may appear to be antithetical to the core principals of our legal system. People believe what they believe. But ironically, being seen as guilty in the court of public opinion sometimes helps one's defense in the legal system as they can argue that their chances of getting impartial jury are reduced.
