Yes, Keno, it was a different world back then. I did not really ever consider the lyrics of 'Till The Next Time We Say Goodbye', which is a song I've always loved.
Its true that some people will question how others come forward for sexual offences years, sometimes decades later. What we have seen in the past few decades is men and women come out and accuse people for things allegedly done 40, 50, even 60 years prior. And the elapsed time will always be problematic to the judicial system. But we do have it entrenched in many laws, in many jurisdictions, that there is no statutory limit for these sorts of crimes. There is reason behind this, just as there is reason behind victims being unable to come forward for a long time. We need to understand this. No one would ever suggest that things do not have to be proven in court, and that the standard for proving it should be, just as with other crimes, a high one. But decades ago people simply could not come forward. They weren't believed, their character was assassinated, and even when there was belief that something bad happened, institutions wanted to keep it quiet, so they dealt with offenders administratively rather than focus on victims.
I think we need to see this present movement as one that is a matter of justice playing out through generations.
Will some people falsely accuse others? YES. But this has always happened for all offences. And hopefully those falsely accused will be vindicated and their accusers outed. There are actually recent cases that we can point to where this has happened.
Is it okay for careers to be ruined, and people fired for these offenses? Of course it is, and especially if they are guilty. The rights of private businesses and corporations to respond this way is well established in the law.
We ought not to see the "MeToo" movement as anything but what it is: the long game of justice playing out in our society.
