I do believe that false accusations do occur. But I think we have smartened up as a culture. Take the cases of comedian Aziz Ansari or journalists Steve Paiken and Ryan Lizza. All of these cases were launched by women, using the internet as the launch pad. It was clear that the cases held no water nothing more came of them. Paiken's employer stood by him, and CNN simply put Lizza on a brief suspension so they could investigate the matter and then brought him back when the case was found to be baseless. Ansari's accuser was rightly ridiculed.
False accusations occur with all sorts of crimes, some published, some not. The big celebs who are going down over these allegations have led very public lives, and this is par for the course. Their employers have every right to take actions that protect their interests.
I just can't think of any cases where someone was falsely accused and where their situation was not reversed. What we do have are cases where guys who we know are guilty are still out there, and in some cases still working, such as Roman Polanski. And there are cases where we may never know the truth, such as the case of Michael Jackson.
But all this aside, I share the discomfort that many feel about a situation we find ourselves in where accusers are automatically believed no matter what. That's just not the way we have operated as a just and fair society. But the truth is that in our so called just and fair society, for countless generations, chosen to ignore the plight of those who truly have been harmed. And so now, a mere utterance can totally change our view of someone, and, yes, ruin a career. Sometimes this sort of abrogation of convention is what is required to bring about real change.
