I respect your opinion, as always, Keno. I will do some research and am open to changing my view on this but, having listened to DP for 30+ years, even when I was a kid, I never considered them "heavy metal". Same with LZ, whom I liked a lot at the time (only somewhat now). And I was a big Sabbath fan (metal for sure!).
I still personally draw a distinction between "rock and roll" and "rock", though it can get pretty blurry.
This is just how I understood/used the terms.
I swear I read an Ian Gillan quote where he said DP is not heavy metal but I can't find it. Of course their first three albums, without Gillan, were *definitely* not metal; the later stuff is the disputable work.
Here are two quotes I found from Gillan (not that I agree!).
"Heavy metal drives me bonkers, it makes me want to vomit, heavy metal really is a pile of puke."
"Well I’ve been called a lot of things over the years; some of them not too pleasant. But, heavy metal is a term that is just unintentionally clumsy. It induces anything from a raised eyebrow to mild nausea in most of the musicians I know. However it is nowhere near as offensive or irritating as the equally unintentional — but much more damaging — knell of death known as 'classic rock'."
