(Note: This page may need reloading on some browsers for new views)
Trinidad and Walsenburg are sister cities in southern Colorado, separated by 36 miles (58 km) via Interstate 25. Also connected by the stunning and nearby Highway of Legends Scenic Byway, an 82-mile scenic byway winding through the San Isabel National Forest and past the towering Spanish Peaks. The drive takes about two hours and is filled with ghost towns and mining history. But both towns serve as popular gateways to the Spanish Peaks, the San Isabel National Forest, and outdoor recreation.
Walsenburg (elevation 6,300 feet / 1,900 meters) is the county seat and the most populous city of Huerfano County, Colorado The town's population was 3,049 at the 2020 census. It is located to the north of Trinidad. The town is the northern terminus of the Highway of Legends. Walsenburg also provides direct access to US-160, heading west toward and into the San Luis Valley via La Veta Pass. Key attractions here are Lathrop State Park, which features two lakes for water recreation, golf, and mountain views, alongside local antique shops and mining museums.
Trinidad (elevation 6,030 feet / 1,840 meter) is the most populous city of Las Animas County, and is situated on the historic Santa Fe Trail. It's also located near the New Mexico border, directly south of Walsenburg on I-25. According to the 2020 Census, the town's population was 8,329. Key attractions in Trinidad are the Trinidad Lake State Park, for boating, camping, and hiking; the trails of Fishers Peak State Park, and the Trinidad Trolley for seasonal historic tours. Drop City, a counterculture artists' community and known as the first rural "hippie commune" in the U.S., was formed in 1964 on land about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Trinidad.
Because these two towns sit in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, sudden shifts in temperature and weather systems are common. Both experience a semiarid climate, with hot summers and cold winters, and both are on the windy side. Walsenburg generally receives more annual snowfall than Trinidad, though both see the bulk of their accumulation in the early spring months (such as March). Trinidad receives an average annual snowfall of 55.1 inches (140 cm), while Walsenburg experiences a lot more, an average of roughly around 86 inches (218 cm).
