South Fork is a small mountain town lying at the confluence of the South Fork and Rio Grande rivers and at the base of Wolf Creek Pass. One of Colorado's newer towns (incorporated in 1992), South Fork is in Rio Grande County, Colorado. Sitting at 8,216 feet / 2,504 meters, the population was 507 and falling, as of 2023. However, it has many part-time residents and sees about 600 folks living there in the summertime. According to the US Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2), all land. It was once the site of timber milling operations and today is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, a gateway to adventure in all seasons, from the powdery slopes of Wolf Creek to the tranquil riverbanks.
The town once was the site of timber milling operations. South Fork was founded in 1882, dating from the construction of the railroad connection of the Rio Grande Western Railroad line to Creede, which had been built to support the Creede silver mine. It was only in 1992 that South Fork achieved independent statutory town status. Distance away from some Colorado cities are: Denver 4½ hrs, Grand Junction 4½ hrs, Colorado Springs 3½ hrs, Pueblo 3hrs.
South Fork, Colorado, features a high-altitude, semi-arid climate characterized by cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers, with over 300 days of sunshine annually. Temperatures range from winter lows below freezing to summer highs in the upper 70s (F) . Average snowfall is around 50 inches (127 cm), while annual precipitation is limited to less than 20 inches (51 cm).

The town's name is most commonly pronounced /ˈdɛl nɔɹt/. It's population was 1,458 at the 2020 US Census. Formerly a stage stop and a rowdy, ragtag supply town for miners, this town is surrounded by 3,778 acres of public lands and features tremendous outdoor adventures. The Airport shown below, is named for Astronaut Kent Rominger. Kent was born in Del Norte, and he graduated from Del Norte High School in 1974. Del Norte is east of South Folk, with the two towns just 17 minutes (15.9 miles/25.6 kilometers) apart via US-160. The town features a semi-arid, high-desert climate characterized by warm, dry summers, cold winters, and low annual precipitation, averaging only 10 to 12 inches annually, with most precipitation falling during late summer.
