This Colorado/Kansas border cam is located on the U.S. Great Plains, on U.S. 50 between Holly, Colorado and Coolidge, Kansas. Holly is officially recognized as the lowest-elevation municipality in Colorado, sitting at just 3,393 feet / 1,034 meters above sea level. Despite having the lowest elevation of any Colorado city, town, village or hamlet, Holly is still higher than the high points of 19 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The town population was 837 at the 2020 United States census.The eastern edge of Holly, Colorado is practically on the state line, sitting just 4.3 miles (just under 7 kilometers) west of the Kansas border along US-50. Because the town is so close, you can reach the Kansas state line in about 5 minutes of driving.
Holly was settled as a ranching community, and the town was incorporated in 1903. The town was named for Hiram S. Holly, a local cattleman. Holly Sugar was created in the town in 1905. The production of Holly Sugar was so successful the company quickly expand to other communities. By 1911, Holly Sugar had expanded outside Colorado. The company in time left the Holly community.
Holly's climate is classified as being semi-arid. It can and does get very hot here, with record highs above 100°F (38°C) reached several times between the months of May and September, and just missing the 100 degree mark in April (at 99°F) and in October (at 97°F). The all time high was 111°F (44°C), set on July 11, 1954. The coldest reading ever was −28°F (−33°F) on January 30, 1949. Average snowfall in Holly is 21.5 inches (55 cm) per snow season.
