I honestly do not know how to rate Charlie Watts as a drummer.
I see a few problems with that question. First, are we rating him against other drummers?
Not being a musician, I find it hard to rate him. But even harder is the issue of separating my adoration of him from an honest appraisal of his abilities, which, as I said, I am ill-equipped to provide. Watts is a legend, kind of a character, and one of the most famous men in Rock 'N Roll. Heck, he was called the best dressed man in Britain at one time. Separating the legend from his playing is very hard.
I also don't see the Stones as having really arduous or complex drumming. They are not like Pink Floyd, RUSH, Genesis, or other bands. Then again, as I said, I am no musician so maybe this assessment is way off. Watts is certainly not just a guy who keeps time. But I don't know how to rate him.
