PIB/Fool 2 Cry/ABB vs SG/Crazy people/Fabs

Yes, week 999 of the Rolling Stones poll is here – and just a week to go to reach 1,000 weeks of polling! I guess that really is a ton of weeks, ain’t it?

At the Stones poll we’re been voting on 3 new polls a week for several weeks now, and we’ll continue to do that until we hit the 1000 week marker. So in other words, next week will be the last week of that – or any more polls period at the weekly Stones poll. The 3 polls we are running right now include the usual Stones album VS poll, plus 2 Stones video polls, too.

This week's first Stones poll question will ask this: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for “Paint it Black”

Although we rated a "Paint it Black" video before in this poll (the roller coaster version) and it was given the worst rating in this series ever (only a "3" – and IMO it totally deserved it), my feeling was that since that one wasn't put together by or even made for the Stones (yet for whatever reason the Stones did embrace it after it was made), I wanted to rate a PIB piece where the band is actually shown in, since this was one of their best ever songs - period. I mean if you had to name the one Stones song that brought in a lot of young kids to this band - perhaps even still to this day, it's PIB.

PIB, was released in 1966 and it featured Brian Jones playing both the lead riff on a sitar, and also playing a tamboura (the instrument you hear that makes the very cool drone sound in the second part of the song). For this semi live TV take that was performed on The Ed Sullivan Show on September 11, 1966, that night 52 years and one week ago, was the first time that the Stones didn't play live on the show, a rule that Sullivan always insisted on from all of his performers. But Jones' right hand had just come out of a cast, and as it was, it came out of that cast just 2 days before the show and 2 to 3 weeks before the cast should have been removed, just so he could be on the show. Doing that resulted in his hand not healing right and having to have it broke and fixed again in surgery 2 years later by a surgeon, since the way it was after this, limited his guitar playing, which was part of the reason why he started to play more keyboards in the band after this happened. But while his cast was removed 2 days before the show (you can see it's still bandaged in the clip) there was no way he could play the sitar live since he could barely move his fingers at that point. So because of this, Sullivan allowed the Stones to mimic along to recorded music, and that in turn set a precedent for others on the show not having to play live either. In fact, the Stones never played lived again on the remaining Sullivan shows that they appeared on in the future. Plus of course, BJ also could not play 2 instruments at once, and nobody else in the band knew how to play the tamboura, which while only heard near the end of the song, it still stood out as another lead instrument when it was heard, so thanks to the recorded music playing, you can clearly hear it wailing away in this clip anyway, even with nobody playing it on stage (but this is not unusual to see and hear in modern day videos, and you will also see this happen in the Stones other video that we are rating this week with only one of the 3 keyboards used in the song shown being played). But heck, future videos that not only the Stones, but all rock bands made and still make today are like this of course, so we shouldn’t hold that against the band in this one. Hell, it was just cool to see them playing this song as it was, and Mick was at least singing the song live, too.

But if you're about to rate this song less than a 9 or a 10, it might be because of the lack of footage showing BJ, as he's clearly the main player on the song, and while they definitely do show him a bunch, for about a good third of the song, maybe a bit more than that, they show the 4 other Stones all at once playing together and no Brian at all. That' is of course the fault of the show's director and not the band, but we are rating not only the song and the performance, but the entire video, and what the director did or didn't do counts here in your rating. Yet I’ll note that TV directors in the ‘60s were the worst when it came to showing all rock bands and showing the wrong members at the wrong time, so the Stones weren’t the only bands to suffer from this back then.

Now, something that I should had made clear weeks ago and didn't, is that one must understand that by my using "TV performance" in the wording in the question, well that doesn't so much mean the performance itself, but explains what this piece was, in other words, I don't use "video" there since it wasn't made to be a video, as there weren't any videos being made yet in 1966. The "video" here in this case came from a TV show.

The Stones second poll this week will ask this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Fool To Cry”

This is the official video for the Stones' 1976 single "Fool To Cry". While this one looks live, and like with all music videos, everything the Stones are doing in this one is miming along, and unlike say the "Paint it Black" clip that we are also rating this week, even Mick's vocals are lip synced in this clip, too. So even if this one looks live, it ain't. Yet the fact they make it look so real, IMO, could actually be looked at as a plus when rating it.

"Fool To Cry" comes from the band's LP Black and Blue, the LP which when sessions were held for it, they lacked a second guitar player. So guitarist Wayne Perkins is filling in playing the lead guitar on this track (actually, he was auditioning for the second guitar part in the band). Nicky Hopkins plays most of the keyboards you hear on this tune, too, but while that was true, MJ also played electric piano on here. The song did reached #6 on the UK Singles Chart and #10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Stones third poll running this week is where we conduct the Stones album VS matchups, and this week’s question asks: A Bigger Bang vs Some Girls, which album do you like the best?

vs

For the very last time I will run and we will vote in “The Big Bang Polls”, featuring the Stones 2005 LP A Bigger Bang, as this LP becomes first Stones album to finish the entire cycle in these album VS polls, having after this week completed all of the 24 rounds any one album can take part in. So yes, we really are getting to the end of this series, even if there's still a bunch more matches to be conducted.

A Bigger Bang will enter its last hurrah with a record of 7-14-2, and sits in 18th place in the album standings. So while it's guaranteed a losing record no matter if it even pulls off an upset win this week, its final place in the standings isn't set yet, as several of the albums surrounding it could pull ahead or fall below it. So it will still be a while till we know where it's final slot in all of these battles will be, other than it will end up on the bottom half of the standings for sure. That's really too bad, since IMO this LP was a very good one, and it deserved a much better spot than that in these standings.

1978’s Some Girls is having a much better time in these matchups, sporting a winning record of 15-4, good for 6th place, and a win this week would move it up into a tie for 5th place. But I’m jumping way ahead here, and on the other side of the coin, a loss would drop it down into 7th place, too.

Looking back at our 3 Stones polls last week, at the first poll we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for “I Am Waiting”

The Stones TV performances clips continued last week to do very well in these rating polls, with “I Am Waiting” scoring a “10” with just a bit under 35% of the votes.

To check out the full final results from this one, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 998, poll 1. Or, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Neighbours”

This video, which was a true rock video for sure, did well in the polling too, scoring a top pick of “9”, with 21.1% of the vote. You can view the final results from this second poll here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 998, poll 2. Or, like with the first vid, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done (or even watch the other vids) by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s VS Stones poll, the question asked was: Dirty Work vs 12x5, which album do you like the best?

vs

Okay, so you didn’t really think that Dirty Work had any chance last week, did you? It hasn’t had any chance in any of the other past matches and with only one matchup left for the LP, you can bet it won’t see a single win in this entire series and be the only LP with no wins at all when all is said and done.

Okay, so let’s head on over to the Classic Rock Poll, where we enter poll week 639, and because we’re running 3 poll questions at the Stones poll this week, we will just run the normal first Rock poll question and will again skip running the Rock VS poll for this week.

So for this week’s Rock poll, we will ask yet another kind of question about illness, this time we ask: What's the best Rock song about a person who's either paranoiac, schizophrenic or bipolar?

Back in '14 we did do a 3 part poll about people who were just flat out crazy - including my listing many killers in the poll, as we were looking at that kind of crazy among other things. But this week while we are covering crazy people again, this time we will look at a more special and different kind of crazy, that is those who are paranoiac, schizophrenic, or bipolar. So most of the songs listed 4 years ago won't be in this poll while some that were in that poll will be in this one too. Also to note is that a song using an old meaning of these kind of conditions, that is, words that aren't used today but were in the past, are still included in the list, as they should be, like Hendrix's "Manic Depression", which is a mental and medical condition that isn’t called that anymore today and instead the condition is now called "bipolar".

Funny that I noted last week a lack of songs about being sick, yet when it comes to a person being this kind of crazy, there's a lot more songs to choose from. Anyway, just click here to see the songs that are listed, and then you can make your pick and vote: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s Rock poll, it asked: What's the best Rock song about being in a hospital or being sick?

You may recall that 2 weeks ago when “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd was chosen the top pick when the questions asked about doctor visits, I felt that was a poor choice for first place, since the main story about that song was about a sick person, and I felt if anything it would for sure take first place in last week’s poll, where it should have been picked instead, as I at least felt it was the best song for this poll question and not for one about a doctor’s visit. But it wasn’t picked last week for first, as it came in second instead. I’ll just never totally get how everybody votes in these polls even after 998 straight weeks of running weekly polls on the domain. “Sister Morphine” by the Stones took first instead (not a bad pick at all, just not the best pick listed, IMO), while in third was the song I went with, “Coconut” by Harry Nilsson, but it was tied for third with John Lennon’s “Cold Turkey”.

We finish up this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 392 of voting, and ask this new question: Beatles For Sale vs A Hard Day's Night, which album do you like the best?

vs

Time to start another new Beatles album series this week and I'll call this one the "Beatles on Sale" Polls, featuring the Beatles LP with the dumbest title (IMO) Beatles For Sale (there isn't too much for me to play along with in naming this sub-series' title, either, hence the not so cool title that I named this series). Like "The Help! Wanted Polls" from last week, this one and the remaining polls for this series will be a short one, and for its first week it will go up against the LP that was the guest LP in last week's poll, A Hard Day's Night. Plus it looks like at this point that I may just ride out this series all at once and just keep it going until it's finished in a few weeks, as there aren't a lot of matches left anyway.

To see the song list for each album, for Beatles For Sale, click on: BFS, and for A Hard Day's Night, click here: AHDN.

To vote in this poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Help! vs A Hard Day's Night, which album do you like the best?

vs

So in this battle of the Beatle movie albums, Help! won in a close match. To see the numbers from the poll’s final results, just click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 391. Plus the results will also show up on the The Beatles' Albums Page over at the Lennon site.

So that does it for this week’s poll post. As you all know, next week marks week 1,000 for the Stones poll! Wow, to think it’s been that many weeks! I’ve been asked throughout the years just how I come up with new question every week after so many weeks and never repeat any questions. Well the truth is, after some suggested that I do repeat questions, I actually did repeat about 5 or 6 questions in all of these years, with all of that happening a few years back during a 6 month period. But I hated repeating in that way and stopped doing it after that, But anyway, it just seemed like it really wasn’t that hard to come up with new question each week, although in the last 2 or 3 years it did become a bit harder not to repeat, yet I didn’t.

I thank all of you for voting in these polls each week!... and since next week will be that special week at the Stones poll, make sure you don’t miss voting in it since you won’t be able to vote in the Stones weekly poll ever again - not at the Stones poll anyway. But in the meanwhile, remember to first vote in this week’s 3 Stones polls, and also in our other 2 polls, too!
