Old Forge, New York
Woodgate, New York

Old Forge is a small town on New York State Route 28 in Herkimer County, New York. The population was 727 at the 2020 census. It is one of the western gateway communities of the Adirondack Park and is the largest hamlet in the historic Town of Webb.  Its elevation is 1,857 feet (566 meters) and it covers 407.0/sq mi (157.15/km2).

The first forge in Old Forge, was built in 1817 by Charles Herreshoff, who established the forge as part of an iron-making venture, which ultimately gave the town its name. But the iron industry was short-lived because of the poor quality of the ore. After Herreshoff's death in 1819, the settlement was mostly abandoned, though its name remained, as did a few settlers. Then a railroad was built in 1888 and the town started to grow again. The town was incorporated in October 1903. But the incorporation would be short-lived, as residents voted to dissolve the village on July 11, 1933. After a few lawsuits were settled in court, it was officially able to dissolve on March 31, 1936. In time, what was left of the town, started to grow once again.

Many mountain peaks can be seen from the village, including nearby McCauley Mountain, home of McCauley Mountain Ski Resort, which helped the area rebound by the 1960s. Old Forge is frequently affected by lake-effect snow, and with 65% snowmaking capabilities, the resort was a hit, as McCauley averages 105 days of skiing per season, which for the Mid-Atlantic region anyway, that's a lot of days!

Woodgate is 20 miles south of Old Forge and sits at 1,480 feet (450 meters) in Oneida County, located along NY State Route 28, in the western Adirondack foothills. Most folks don't know about this small hamlet, but I have fond memories of Woodgate, as I spent several summers and winter holidays there as a boy and always had a great time. Sadly, looking at the local cam today, it's looking very much developed now, but 60 plus years later, you got to expect that. I still recall fondly the very small, old Woodgate Post Office that is no more. Being that I grew up around the NYC area, where everything was gigantic (still is of course) to a (or any) child, that old little building and tiny town was a joy, and I'll never forget about my time spent visiting there!

Old Forge and Woodgate are part of the same cold-prone region, frequently listed together during extreme arctic air outbreaks. With that noted, both areas features a cold, humid continental climate, characterized by cool, mild summers and cold, snowy winters, averaging 158 inches / 400 cm a year of snowfall. On February 17, 1979, the all time record low temperature for New York state was set in Old Forge at −52°F (−47°C). The warmest ever day was set on July 10, 1913, when the high reached 95°F (35°C).
