Moose River, New York

The Moose River is a 3-branch mountain waterway in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The three branches are: the North Branch, Middle Branch and the South Branch. The outlet of Big Moose Lake forms the North Branch in northern Herkimer County, the south branch in Hamilton County. The Middle Branch originates at the Fulton Chain Lakes in Old Forge.

The lake is famous for backcountry camping and fishing. Highlights here are: Whitewater Rafting: Known as the wildest rafting trip in the Northeast. Guided excursions are offered by local outfitters. Paddling & Kayaking: The Middle Branch (stretching near Old Forge) offers meandering, flat-water paddling and oxbows perfect for spotting wildlife. Moose River Plains: This 80,000-acre wild forest boasts hundreds of primitive campsites, hiking routes like the Beaver Lake Trail, and extensive mountain roads open for motorized recreation and snowmobiling. Fishing: The various branches offer prime angling conditions, especially for Smallmouth bass, Northern pike, and Largemouth bass.

The Moose River area, features a classic Humid Continental (Dfb) climate. It is known for long, frigid, snowy winters and short, mild, comfortable summers. It is historically one of the coldest regions in the state and yes, Moose River frequently freezes over during the winter (at least near Old Forge anyway, as I've see this take place myself). However, because it is a flowing river with varying currents and rapids, the freezing is often unstable, with many sections developing moving ice floes and open water spots rather than a solid, safe surface The region around Moose River receives an average of 120 to 180 inches (304.8 to 457.2 cm) of snow annually.
