Albany (elevation 148 feet / 45 meters) is the capital city of New York State and the seat of Albany County. It is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, about 10 miles (16 km) south of its confluence with the Mohawk River, and about 140 miles (225 km) north of New York City. With an estimated population of 1.1 million in 2013, the Capital District is the third most populous metropolitan region in the state. As of 2020, Albany's population was 99,224 (100,826  est. in 2022), with a total area of 21.8 square miles (56 km2), of which 21.4 square miles (55 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (1.8%) is water.

Downtown’s huge Empire State Plaza has reflecting pools, an art-filled underground shopping concourse and The Egg, a striking performing arts center. The plaza is bookended by the 1800s New York State Capitol and the New York State Museum, focusing on natural and cultural history. The Albany Institute of History and Art is famed for its Hudson River School paintings. 

Albany is in the humid continental climate zone (Köppen climate classification: Dfa), and features cold, snowy winters, and hot, humid summers. The city receives 40.7 inches (1,030 mm) of liquid precipitation per year, with 59.4 inches (151 cm) of snowfall per snow season. Record temperature extremes range from −28°F (−33°C), on January 19, 1971, to 104°F (40°C) on July 4, 1911.
