Silt (elevation 5,456 feet / 1,663 meters) is a small town in Garfield County, Colorado. Its population was 3,536 at the 2020 census. It's located on the north side of the Colorado River about 175 miles (282 km) west of Denver. Interstate 70 passes through the town as it follows the river. The community was named for the silt deposits at the original town site. The distance between Slit and New Castle is just 7 miles (11 km). Silt has a humid continental climate. It has a average precipitation of 11.6 inches / 290 mm a year, and receives an average annual snowfall of about 32 to 36 inches / 91 cm.

- New Castle -
The Town of New Castle (elevation 5,811 feet / 1,771 meters) is in Garfield County, Colorado. The population was 4,923 at the 2020 census. When incorporated in 1888, its economy was largely based on coal mining. Because of past accidents that caused explosions, today there's at least 25 coal fires burning near the town that are confined underground. Between 1896 and 1911, 90 miners were killed in three of those explosions.
