The City of Longmont (elevation 4,981 feet / 1,518 meters) is located in Boulder and Weld counties, northeast of Boulder. Longmont's population was 98,711 at the time of the 2020 U.S. Census, making it the 14th most populous city in Colorado. The name "Longmont" comes from Longs Peak, a 14,259-foot (4,346 meter) fourteener that is located nearby. St. Vrain Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River, flows through the city just south of the city center. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Longmont has a total area of 27.6 square miles (71.6 km2), of which 26.2 square miles (67.8 km2) is land and 1.5 square miles (3.8 km2), or 5.30%, is water.

Longmont has a cold semi-arid climate..The hottest temperature recorded in Longmont was 106°F (41°C), it was reached twice, first on July 7, 1973, and then tied on June 27, 1994, while the coldest temperature recorded was −38°F (−39°C) on January 16, 1930. The town's annual snowfall is 32.2 inches (81.67 cm).

The Town of Lyons (elevation 5,341 feet / 1,628 meters) is just to the west of Longmount, in Boulder County. The town population was 2,209 according to the 2020 United States Census. Lyons is located at the confluence of North St. Vrain Creek and South St. Vrain Creek. Lyons is noted for its arts, culture and outdoor recreation opportunities. The downtown district features historic buildings, public art, independent merchants, and variety of eating and drinking establishments.

Rabbit Mountain, shown below, is a popular nature reserve located in unincorporated Boulder County, Colorado, situated between Lyons and Berthoud. It features diverse wildlife, including a major bison herd, and offers sweeping views of the Rocky Mountain foothills
