Clear Creek Tunnels 2 thru 6, Colorado
(Note: This page may need reloading on some browsers for new views)
Clear Creek Tunnels 2, 3, 5 and 6 are located on Hwy 6, east of Idaho Springs and west of Golden, Colorado. Clear Creek Tunnel 1 is located on Hwy 6, east of Idaho Springs and west of Golden, Colorado. Most of the roadway and six tunnels through Clear Creek Canyon were built between 1937 and 1941 or between 1945 and 1952, as most construction was halted during World War II. Prior to that, U.S. 6 and U.S. 40 shared the alignment via Mount Vernon between Idaho Springs and Golden. Originally there were six tunnels, but Tunnel #4 near the intersection with SH 119 is no longer in use. Built in 1939, the 191.9 foot long tunnel was barricaded from use in 1998 when the intersection joining U.S. 6 and SH 119 was relocated to the southeast (see it's photo down below).
