Castle Rock, Colorado

Castle Rock is the county seat of Douglas County, Colorado. The most populous municipality of the county, it's growing population was 73,158 at the 2020 United States Census, a 51.68% increase since the 2010 United States Census. It is named for the prominent, castle tower-shaped butte near the center of town. Nestled midway between Denver and Colorado Springs in central Colorado, at the junction of Interstate 25 and State Highway 86, 28 miles (45 km) south of downtown Denver and 37 miles (60 km) north of Colorado Springs. The city lies a few miles east of the Rampart Range of the Rocky Mountains on the western edge of the Great Plains and sits at an elevation of 6,224 feet (1,897 meters).

The new town started out in 1862 after the discovery of rhyolite stone in the area, which ultimately led to the settlement of Castle Rock. At that time, the settlement consisted of just a few buildings for prospectors, workers, and cowboys. But Castle Rock grew and was officially founded by 1874 when the eastern Douglas County border was redrawn to its present location and the growing town was chosen as the county seat because of its central location. It wouldn't become a true city until after the year 2000, when the population started to boom.

Castle Rock has a semiarid climate with cold and dry winters with moderate snowfall (for most US locations, but for Colorado, actually a bit below average), and hot, wetter summers. January is the coldest month, July the hottest, and August the month with the most precipitation. Its average snowfall is 57.5 inches (145.7 cm) with overall average liquid precip at 17.60 inches (447 mm). It's all-time high temp was set 102°F (39°C) on July 11, 2022; while its record cold reading of -37 °F (-38°C) was set way back on January 6, 1913.
