The Caribbean (/ˌkærɪˈbiːən, kəˈrɪbiən/ KARR-ih-BEE-ən, kə-RIB-ee-ən, locally /ˈkærɪbiːæn/ KARR-ih-bee-an; Spanish: el Caribe; French: les Caraïbes; Dutch: de Caraïben) is a subregion of the Americas that includes the Caribbean Sea and its islands, some which are surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and some which border both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The region is south-east of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and north of South America, and has thousands of islands, islets, reefs, and cays. The entire Caribbean area has 40 countries and territories, and is organized into 33 political entities, including 13 sovereign states, 12 dependencies, historical disputed territories, and seven other overseas territories.

Because of a history of waves of immigration brought by colonization by the Spanish, English, Dutch, and French, the Atlantic slave trade from Africa, and indentured servitude from Asia, as well as modern immigration, the Caribbean is one of the most ethnically diverse regions on the planet with persons of all these ethnic backgrounds.

The geography and climate in the Caribbean region varies. Some islands in the region have relatively flat terrain of non-volcanic origin, to others having rugged towering mountain-ranges. The climate of the area is tropical, varying from tropical rainforest in some areas to tropical monsoon and tropical savanna in others. There are also some locations that are arid climates with considerable drought in some years, and the peaks of mountains tend to have cooler temperate climates. The air temperature is hot much of the year, varying from 25°C to 33°C (77°F to 90°F) between the wet and dry seasons. Sea surface temperatures change little annually, normally running from 30°C (87°F) in the warmest months to 26°C (76°F) in the coolest months. Hurricane season is from June to November, but they occur more frequently in August and September and more common in the northern islands of the Caribbean.

Mambo Beach & Seaquarium Beach, Curaçao
(from SHOWME Caribbean)

The Country of Curaçao (/ˈkjʊərəsoʊ, -saʊ, ˌkjʊərəˈsoʊ, -ˈsaʊ/ KURE-ə-soh, KURE-ə-sow, kure-ə-SOH, or kure-ə-SOW, Dutch: [kyːraːˈsʌu]), is a Lesser Antilles island in the southern Caribbean Sea, in the Dutch Caribbean region, about 65 km (40 mi) north of Venezuela. It is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Curaçao has a population of 158,665 (January 2019 est.), with an area of 444 km2 (171 sq mi). Curaçao has a hot, semi-arid climate, with a dry season from January to September and a wet season from October to December. Rainfall is scarce, only 450 millimeters (12 inches) per year; in particular, the rainy season is drier than it normally is in tropical climates; during the dry season, it almost never rains. As little as 200 millimeters or 8 inches may fall in a strong El Niño year, but as much as 1,150 millimeters or 45 inches has happened in powerful La Niña years. No hurricane has made landfall in Curaçao since the U.S. National Hurricane Center started tracking hurricanes. Curaçao has, however, been directly affected by pre-hurricane tropical storms several times.

The trade winds cool the island during the day and warm it at night. The coolest month is January with an average temperature of 26.6°C or 80°F; the hottest is September with an average temperature of 29.1°C or 84°F. The seawater around Curaçao averages around 27°C (81°F).

Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands
(From https:SOGGY DOLLAR)

One of the smallest of the four main islands of the British Virgin Islands. Jost Van Dyke (named for a Dutch pirate who hid out here several times) measures roughly 8 square kilometers (3 square miles). It rests in the northern portion of the Virgin Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Jost Van Dyke lies about 8 km (5 mi) to the northwest of Tortola and 8 km (5 mi) to the north of Saint John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Little Jost Van Dyke lies off its eastern end. Like many of the neighboring islands, it is volcanic in origin and mountainous. The highest point on the island is Majohnny Hill at 321 m (1,053 ft).

As at the 2010 Census, the population of Jost Van Dyke was 298. Most living on the island are young, with nearly one-half (46%) of residents under the age of 35 and almost 70% under the age of 50.

Located in nearby White Bay is the Soggy Dollar Bar, a famous beach bar on the island. The bar is appropriately named because when built there was neither a road nor a dock that lead to it (today there is now a road, but still no dock). To reach the beach where the bar is located, it is a common practice for boaters to anchor off the beach, swim to shore, and pay for their drinks with wet money, thus it's name, The Soggy Dollar Bar.
