Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. Its population has rapidly increased over the last 40 years, and is relatively young. In some African states, more than half the population is under 25 years of age. The total number of people in Africa increased from 229 million in 1950 to 630 million in 1990. As of 2021, the population of Africa is estimated at 1.4 billion and it accounts for about 18% of the world's human population.
At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, Africa covers 20% of Earth's land area and 6% of its total surface area. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Isthmus of Suez and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It straddles the equator and the prime meridian and is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to the southern temperate zones. The majority of the continent and its countries are in the Northern Hemisphere, with the rest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Climate wise, equatorial West and Central Africa have a monsoon climate defined by high temperatures, soaring humidity, and heavy seasonal rains. East Africa has distinct dry and rainy seasons, while Southern Africa is generally more temperate. The hottest known temperature in Africa is 55°C (131°F), recorded in Kebili, Tunisia in 1931. Ifrane holds the record for the lowest temperature ever observed in Africa: −24°C (−11°F) on February 11, 1935. Contrary to popular belief, snowfall is not an unheard-of phenomenon in certain parts of the African continent. While Africa is renowned for its warm tropical climate, there are regions where winter brings a blanket of snow, transforming the landscapes into an enchanting winter wonderlands.
