Yaphank (/ˈjæpæŋk/) is a town in Suffolk County, New York. The population was 5,974 at the time of the 2020 census, with an elevation 43 feet (13 meters). Originally called "Millville", but since there were several other towns in New York state at the time with the same name, the town was renamed "Yaphank", from the local Native American word Yamphanke, meaning "bank of a river".

Yaphank experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by warm, humid summers and cold and windy winters. It sees an average annual snowfall of about 25 to 30 inches (63.5 to 76.2 cm). Temperatures in summer are usually in the lower 80sF and rarely rise up past 90 degrees F.


Interstate 495 (I-495), commonly known as the Long Island Expressway (LIE), is an auxiliary Interstate Highway in the state of New York. It is jointly maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation, the New York City Department of Transportation, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Spanning approximately 66 miles (106 km) along a west–east axis, I-495 traverses Long Island from the western portal of the Queens–Midtown Tunnel in the New York City borough of Manhattan to County Route 58 (CR 58) in Riverhead in the east.
