Stony Brook, New York

Stony Brook is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, on the North Shore of Long Island. Despite being referred to as a village by residents and tourists alike, Stony Brook has never been legally incorporated by the state. The population was 13,467 at the 2020 census. The town is adjacent to the main campus of Stony Brook University, the largest public university in New York by area.

Stony Brook's is approximately 55 miles (89 km) east of the New York City borough of Manhattan. Its total area is 6.25 sq mi (16.18 km2), of which 5.82 sq mi (15.08 km2) is land and 0.42 sq mi (1.10 km2), water. It's elevation is 89 feet (27 meters). It's climate is pretty much the same as most of the Island, with hot humid summers and cold damp winters.
