This is Page 1 of 3 of our Manhattan pages. Manhattan is the most densely populated and geographically the smallest of the five boroughs of New York City. The borough is coextensive with New York County in the state of New York, and is the smallest county by land area in the contiguous United States. Located mostly on Manhattan Island near the southern tip of the State of New York, Manhattan constitutes the geographical and demographic center of the Northeast megalopolis and the urban core of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass. Manhattan serves as New York City's economic and administrative center and has been described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world.
The island of Manhattan is the most densely populated part of New York City, bounded by the Hudson, East, and Harlem rivers. It is a global financial, cultural, and architectural powerhouse. Total dimensions of the island is approximately 13.4 miles long and 2.3 miles wide at its broadest point. The street grid in Manhattan runs roughly north to south, with numbered "Streets" running east-west and named "Avenues" running north-south.
The official population of Manhattan in 2020, according to the U.S. census, was 1,694,251. It's land area covers a total of 33.58 square miles (87.0 km2) (Land 22.83 sq. mi [59.1 km2], Water 10.76 sq. mi [27.9 km2]). For a relatively small island (in size), the elevation of Manhattan varies wildly, with its range being from -2 feet (0.6 meters) to 290 feet (88 meters), with it's average being 115 feet (35 meters).
New York City features both a humid subtropical climate and a humid continental climate, The daily mean temperature in January, the area's coldest month, is 32.6°F (0.3°C). Temperatures usually drop to 10°F (−12°C) several times per winter. Summers are typically warm to hot and very humid, with a daily mean temperature of 76.5°F (24.7°C) in July. It's all time high temp was 106°F (41°C), and the lowest ever was −15°F (−26°C). Central Park sees 29.8 inches (76 cm) of snowfall each snow season.
