Long Island Sound, New York

Long Island Sound is a marine sound and tidal estuary of the Atlantic Ocean. It lies predominantly between the U.S. State of Connecticut to the north and Long Island in New York to the south. From west to east, the sound stretches 110 miles (180 km) from the East River in New York City, along the North Shore of Long Island, to Block Island Sound. A mix of freshwater from tributaries, and saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound is 21 miles (34 km) at its widest point and varies in depth from 65 to 230 feet (20 to 70 meters).

Of the numerous rivers that empty into the Sound, most of them (more than 10) come from Connecticut. The ones from New York State are Byram River, in Port Chester; Hutchinson River, in The Bronx;  Mamaroneck River, in Mamaroneck; and the Nissequogue River, in Smithtown.

The whole watershed population around Long Island Sound is about 8.93 million as of the 2010 census. Due to extent of the Connecticut River, many riverside cities and towns are included in the Long Island Sound watershed. Because of that, this total covers 6 different U.S. States, including New York, which includes 5 cities and also parts of 3 NYC boroughs.

The climate of Long Island Sound features a temperate, maritime climate. Precipitation is evenly distributed year-round, averaging 3–4 inches per month. Coastal storms, or "nor'easters," can bring heavy rain and high winds. Winter snowfall varies. Long Island Sound never freezes completely across from shore to shore because it's a tidal saltwater body with active maritime ship traffic and moving currents. Because of that, a total solid freeze is virtually impossible. However, the Sound does partially freeze, with massive, heavy ice floes building up along the northern and eastern shorelines during severe cold snaps. The Sound also acts as a wind corridor. Marine forecasts frequently feature coastal winds and small craft advisories, especially during passing storm systems.
