Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. In 2020, its population was 2,205. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid became known internationally for hosting the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics, the 1972 and 2023 Winter World University Games as well as the 2000 Goodwill Games.

Lake Placid has a humid continental climate, characterized by cool, comfortable summers and long, cold, snowy winters. Situated in the Adirondacks, it is one of New York's coldest areas, with its coldest temperature ever recorded being -41°F /-41.6°C, on January 6, 1904. Its warmest day was 94°F/ 34°C, in July 1916. Lake Placid averages 104.1 inches (or 264 cm) of snow annually.
