Islip and East Islip (elevation 6.6 feet / 2 meters) are connected locations on Long Island, NY, where East Islip is a specific hamlet within the larger Town of Islip, a major township encompassing many communities, including the hamlet of Islip itself, known for its suburban feel, businesses, parks (like Heckscher State Park), marinas, and proximity to the Great South Bay. East Islip offers a downtown area with local eateries, shops, and access to recreation, while the broader Town of Islip serves as a significant Long Island entity with its own airport, history, and diverse neighborhoods.

The population was 339,938 at the time of the 2020 census, making it the fourth most populous city or town in the New York metropolitan area. The Town of Islip also contains a smaller, unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place named Islip, which serves as the town seat. The town has a total area of 162.8 square miles (422 km2), of which 103.2 square miles (267 km2) is land and 59.6 square miles (154 km2) (36.6%) is water.

Under the Köppen climate classification, Islip has a humid continental climate (Dfa), with some maritime influence, just under the threshold a humid subtropical climate (Cfa). The normal average monthly temperature ranges from 31.9°F (−0.1°C) in January to 75.0°F (23.9°C) in July; on average. The record low is −14°F (−25.6 °C), set on February 13, 1967, while the record high is 104°F (40°C), set on July 3, 1966. Like most of Long Island, lots of rain falls here, with liquid precipitation averages of 45.99 inches (1,170 millimeters) annually, with snowfall averages at 31.8 inches (81 centimeters) per year, falling almost entirely from late November to late March.
