East Meadow, New York
East Meadow is a hamlet located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York. The population was 37,796 at the 2020 census. Many residents commute to Manhattan for their jobs, which is about 30 miles (48 km) away (about 15 miles [24 km] to Queens). It's elevation is 72 feet (22 meters). It also happens to be the town on Long Island where your webmaster mainly grew up (from age 5 to 18, just 2 blocks from the third cam showed below on East Meadow Ave, which was called "Newbridge Ave" back then).East Meadow's name is derived from being the meadow of the Hempstead Plains, east of the Meadow Brook. The brook is no more today and pretty much no actual meadow remains in East Meadow either, nor is any of the Hempstead Plains around, due to the post-WWII development boom and later, unchecked suburban sprawl. The crazy thing is most who live here don't care, and that's one of the reasons I left the area and Long Island and the east, as soon as I was old enough to flee the area for the west and open space.
