Another dangerous aspect of learning to play slide is that it SOUNDS so BAD if you don't do it right. It will give you renewed and doubled respect for the slide players you mentioned once you try it....it looks like "oh yuh just slide that there metal thingie up n down the strangs" but it ain't quite as easy as that.
You might want to check out Columbia's Roots and Blues series, "The Slide Guitar: Bottles, Knives & Steel" (several volumes and they're usually The Nice Price or cheaper) to discover the joys of Tampa Red, Barbeque Bob, and other early champions of bottleneck blues.
