I always thought of "Shattered" as the Stones' "take" on "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols. The Pistols were getting a lot of (undeserved) attention about that time, a lot of it by bashing the Stones. I think "Shattered" is musically, lyrically, and emotionally more powerful that GStQ. Does anyone remember their performance of it on Sat Night Live? Talk about a "punk" performance. It was all that and more.
