The Beatles ARE a rock band. They wrote song like I Want You (She's So Heavy), and Helter Skelter. None of the others ever wrote anything as hard as those two, not even Zepp. The Beatles are a different group from the rest. Their music tended to lend itself more to the psychdelia than the blues rock that made the Stones favored. They are much more of a rock band than the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys never wrote a true rock and roll song. Every thing the Beatles did from Rubber Soul and on is Rock and Roll. Abbey Road is very hard rocking album.
About the Who and Zeppelin not aging well, I agree that some of their tunes do get old fast but Led Zepp IV and Who's Next are two of my all time favorite albums and I have never gotten tired of hearing them. The rest of it gets annoying after a while.
On to the Stones, they are better than the 3 others, without a doubt in my mind. To me, the Stones are Rock and Roll. I have a big problem with people who claim that they were washed up after Exile. The have been writing great music all the way up through 1994 with Voodoo Lounge. Some Girls, Tattoo You, and Steel Wheels are also tremendous post-Exile albums. I think they have been good from Start to finish. Aftermath was their best album before the big 4 and one of my all time favorites.
